Chain of Lakes

The Chain of Lakes is fed by the Huron River and consists of nine lakes that stretch 8 miles long and are all connected. The lakes include (in order from north to south):

  • Ore Lake
  • Strawberry Lake
  • Zukey Lake
  • Gallagher Lake
  • Whitewood Lake
  • Tamarack Lake
  • Baseline Lake
  • Big Portage Lake
  • Little Portage Lake

The Chain of Lakes are All-Sports lakes. Big Portage Lake is the largest of the nine lakes with 680 acres and is 84 feet deep. All the lakes are good fishing lakes and hold many tournaments on them in the summer. A very popular area on the chain is the sandbar on Zukey Lake which is right before the connection to Strawberry Lake.

Additional attractions for local residents of the Chain of Lakes include:

  • Zukey Lake Tavern - This hot spot is a local favorite for boaters and the community alike. They feature an outside roof-top deck that offers a Key West feel; the Tiki Bar has fun musical guests all summer long; and the restaurant is best known for their pizza -- boy is it ever good!
  • Klave’s Marina on Big Portage Lake - This is the only marina on the chain, and boaters go there for a gas fill up among many other services. As well as convenient place to fill up your tank, it’s a great place to rent boats (mostly pontoons) for a fun filled day of boating or for any special occasion. They even offer the newest and hottest water sport, Stand Up Paddle (SUP) boards. Not only can you rent the boards at Klave’s, new users can also catch a class over the weekend to learn this fun sport!
  • Portage Yacht Club - Located on the south side of Big Portage Lake, the Portage Yacht Club is family oriented. They have dining and banquet facilities that are open to the public, and often have live entertainment. They also have a marina for transient docking. In addition to their public services, they have scheduled social activities throughout the year for members only; don’t let membership shy you away as it is a very low $50 for the year with no monthly minimums like many others you may have looked at. What is really cool is that they offer a sailboat racing program and “Learn to Sail” classes for adults and juniors….so much fun to be had right in our back yard!
  • Riverside Pizza - Is a popular local eatery/take-out place. They are locally owned and operated, and all their food is freshly made daily. What makes them unique compared to other take-out places is that they are located on the section of the Huron River that connects Base Line Lake to Big Portage Lake, making it a great stopping point to feed all those hungry passengers on your boat for the day!

The nine lakes offer a variety of home ownership, including year round homes and summer-time weekender cottages. Not unlike many of Livingston County’s lakes, home owners in the area, and the public, enjoy year round activities, including great fishing, boating, swimming, ice skating, ice fishing, and snowmobiling, only on the Chain of Lakes the fun is multiplied by 9!

All the lakes are very accessible to US-23 and I-96 which makes the location very convenient. Some Lake front vacant parcels still exist for new construction opportunities.
