Mark your calendar for September 14 GML (Good Morning Livingston)

The 2010-2011 Good Morning Livingston (GML) season kicks off with What’s New in Livingston County at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 14 at Crystal Gardens, 5768 E. Grand River Ave in Howell.

Find out what’s new in the community as local officials and business leaders provide the latest information on developments and projects impacting Livingston County. Guests will hear an update on the Latson Road interchange and other road developments throughout the county from Mike Craine, managing director for the Livingston County Road Commission. City of Howell City Manager Shea Charles will provide an update on current and future plans for Howell, including the city’s new parking lot, the downtown master plan and more. Mike Hall, Cobb-Hall Insurance, and Stewart Brennan, Cleary University, will share updates on the county’s new entrepreneurial initiative, Leg Up! (Livingston Entrepreneurs Group United for Prosperity). The goal of the initiative is to bring together new and established entrepreneurs for educational, networking and resource opportunities.
 
“Some of the hottest topics area business people and residents have seen in the news lately will be covered at this program,” said Pat Convery, chamber president. “The September GML is consistently one of our most popular programs. It serves as a great chance to get caught up on the latest developments, and is a solid foundation for what promises to be another exciting and informative GML series.”
 
Recipients of the 2010 Margaret Starkey Scholarships will also be honored that morning. Serving up ‘September Stroll,’ a taste of downtown Howell

What’s for dinner? Enjoy some of downtown Howell’s favorite restaurants and their specialties during the upcoming September Stroll: a Taste of Downtown Howell. The event takes place Wednesday, September 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. at a variety of participating restaurants, and is hosted by the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors Committee.

“Downtown Howell offers many unique, individually-owned dining establishments set amidst historic buildings, architecture and shopping,” said Kim Esper, membership director and coordinator of the Ambassadors Committee for the chamber. “This charming combination makes Howell a wonderful destination for area residents and guests from surrounding areas. We invite you to sample the best of downtown Howell during the September Stroll.”
 
Restaurants featured in the event include: Cleary’s Pub, Diamond's Steak & Seafood, Howell's MainStreet Winery, Mark's Midtown Coney, Mr. B's Rustic Tavern and Uptown Coffeehouse.
 
Pre-sale tickets are $30 for two diners or $18 each. The day of the event, tickets are two for $35 or $20 each. Tickets include all participating restaurants.

Howell’s Sunday Farmers’ Market
WHEN: Sunday, May 9, 16, 23 & 30, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., and continuing each week through October
WHERE: Downtown Howell on State and Clinton Streets

Howell’s Sunday Farmers’ Market welcomes market-goers with locally-grown and handmade wares at the 2010 Farmers’ Market in Howell. The market is hosted by the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Howell Downtown Development Authority. Major sponsor is First National Bank and the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus is the market’s media sponsor. Partial funding for the weekly entertainment is provided by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs and the Arts Alliance of the Ann Arbor Area.

Over 70 local growers, agricultural producers, artisans and crafts-people offer an array of products throughout the season. The first few weeks will feature:

  • annuals, perennials and hanging baskets
  • vegetable plants and nursery stock for gardeners
  • fresh meats including lamb, goat, duck and rabbit
  • certified organic raw cheese
  • fresh pasture-raised poultry and eggs
  • local honey
  • garden craft items, painted gifts and hand-crafted soaps
  • an assortment of handmade products, baked goods, jams and maple syrup sold each Farmers’ Market day, plus live entertainment each week

Introduction to Mountain Biking

 

This is an experientially-based course in the basic principles of mountain biking theory and practice including safety, technical skills, and trail etiquette and protection. Emphasis will be placed on safety, on development of skills, and proper application. Bring your own bike and helmet (required).

 

Class will be held Sunday, September 19, from 1:00pm-4:00pm or September 25, from 9:00am-12:00pm and held at Marion Oaks.

 

Cost will be $40 for City of Howell and Oceola Township resident, $56 for Marion and Genoa Township residents and $80 for non-residents.

Howell Recreation Preschool & Learning Center 

 

Enroll your child today in one of these active, high energy classes which offer positive parent- child experiences and a love of learning. Your child will enjoy music, art, dramatic play, storytelling an much more! Each class is prepared to be a quality learning experience. Children will investigate the world around them using hands on activities as well as field trips and community visitors. Our program is well established and our teachers are certified with over 14 years experience.

Our programs are based on the belief that children learn through their interaction with adults, other children and their environment. Focusing on the whole child. They are designed to enhance social, emotional, coginitive, physical and creative growth. We emphasize the importance of working cooperatively with parents to achieve this goal. Drawing Class for Kids

 

 

Learn to draw animals using foundation shapes. Children ages 7 and up will learn to see the shapes in the things around them. Then they will break down the shapes to learn how to create animals. Children under 7 may attend with an adult. The instructor provides all supplies. The children will take home  supplies so they can continue to practice what they have learned. A material fee of $5 is payable to the instructor.

Class will be held Wednesday, September 8, from 6:30pm-8:30pm, and held at the Barnard Community Center.

Cost will be $18 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $25 for Marion and Genoa Township residents, and $36 for non-residents.

High Definition Sunflowers Painting Class

 

Learn the art of painting beautiful sunflowers that look like oil, but aren't. A brand new acrylic paint called High Definition looks and feels like oil, but dries quickly, has no odor, and is easily cleaned up with soap and water. Paint a beautiful vase of sunflowers in autumn colors quickly and easily. All supplies and materials are provided. A supply fee of $12 is payable to the instructor.

 

Class will be held on Wednesday, September 1, from 6:30pm-8:30pm and held at the Barnard Community Center.

 

Cost will be $25 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $35 for Marion and Genoa Township residents and $50 for non-residents.

Tiger Game and Buffalo Wild Wings

 

Howell Area Parks and Recreation and Buffalo Wild Wings of Howell have come together to offer a great trip to see the Detroit Tigers play against the Orioles on September 11th. The total cost of your ticket is $55 which includes: a buffet after the game at Buffalo Wild Wings, ticket to the game, transportation and adult beverages on the bus. You must be 21 or older to attend this trip. Please meet at 5:30pm at Buffalo Wild Wings (900 S. Latson Road, Howell) to meet the bus. We will also have give-a-ways on the bus.

Hunter Safety

 

Get your Hunter Safety certificate before small game and deer season starts! This course is DNR approved and provides basic hunting safety material. A certificate will be given upon completion of the assisted 50 questions exam. All students must attend all four classes to receive certificate. Air riffle range test will be given on the last day of class. Adults welcome to attend. Class size is limited. First priority goes to students that will be 12 by March 31, 2011. Any students that are younger than that must be placed on a waiting list. If class does not fill, calls will be made off that waiting list. (Students under 11 years of age must be accompanied by an adult).  

 

Class will be held Monday-Thursday, August 30-September 2, from 6:00pm-9:00pm and held at Marion Township Hall, 2877 W. Coon Lake Road.

Girls Fall Basketball

 

Our program is designed to teach young athletes the game of basketball. Players will become more familiar with skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting. Non-competitive games and practices will take place at various elementary schools for 1st-4th grades and at Middle Schools for 5th and 6th grades, between 6:00-7:00pm and 7:00-8:00pm. Start date will be based on the availability of the gyms. A t-shirt is included in the fee. Deadline to register is October 1. A $10 late fee will be added for registrations after this date. Volunteer coaches are needed to make this program successful.

 

Cost will be $49 for the City of Howell and OceolaTownship residents,$68 for Marion and GenoaTownship residents,$98 for non-residents.

Howell Area Recreation Authority Teen Center

 

After a summer off, the Teen Center is reopening for students on Tuesday, September 7 from 2:30 - 6 p.m.  Note our new hours! 

 

Led by a wonderfully creative and enthusiastic staff, the Howell Teen Center is located right in the heart of downtown Howell at the Barnard Community Center, 415 N. Barnard Street. It is THE place for youth aged 12-18 to hang out, take classes, play pool, air hockey, ping pong, video games, mini-theatre for movies, free wi-fi in our Cyber Cafe, see live bands, go on field trips, and much, much more. While some activities have costs associated with them to cover our expenses, daily admission to the Teen Center is free.

 

To kick off the season there will be a Teen Center Open House, Friday Sept 3, 2010 at 6pm to 10pm. We'll have everything open to use, music going and a BBQ! Great time to check the center out teen and parent alike!

Summer Savings still in effect!  Summer schedule goes until September 3rd so take advantage summer savings on open swim, family swims, and exercise classes.

 

Swim Lesson Registration is in effect!  Sign up for our Learn to Swim program's courses this fall & winter now until spots fill.  Choose your day once a week on Monday evenings, Tuesday am, Wednesday evenings, or Saturdays.  Classes are filling now, so call or visit us online to sign up today, ages 6 months to adults!

 

Aerobics boom!!  Check out all of our new classes and times this fall for a huge variety of water aerobics and land aerobics classes to fit your needs.  We don't offer the time you are looking for?  Mention it to your instructor today and we'll try to get one going!

 

Fall Savings!!  Save $$ by purchasing a punch card or membership.  6 month Exercise membership now through September 30th is only $175.  Save $25 off the normal price, or purchase a yearly exercise membership for $350.  With either membership coming 3 times a week you per class cost is only $2.33 per class, while the walk in rate is $8/class this fall.

 

Open/Adult/Family swims are $3 this fall, however purchase a punch card valid for lap swim, adult swim, family swim or open swim and save $$ at $55 for 20 visits, only $2.75 per swim!
